November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, kicking off 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. Following an eight-year absence from the PACWEST podium, the Camosun Chargers Women’s Basketball team impressed both fans and foes alike last season with their tenacity and determination as the squad fought their way to an epic battle in the gold medal game of the 2018 Provincial Championships where they netted the program’s first medal finish since 2010.

Camosun College Alumni Association and Josai International University (JIU) co-hosted an alumni event at the Embassy of Canada in Tokyo on October 25.

BC post-secondary faculty and staff now have a wealth of in-depth resources and support as they work toward incorporating reconciliation and Indigenization into their teaching and learning practices, thanks to a new series of open educational guides. The project was managed by Camosun College faculty member Dianne Biin in collaboration with BCcampus, the Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training and a community of Indigenous and ally writers across the province.

With four consecutive PACWEST Championship titles under their belt, the Camosun Chargers Men’s Volleyball team is setting up for another exciting season as the squad chases after its first-ever provincial five-peat finish.

Lynelle Yutani's first job in Canada after moving to Victoria from Wyoming in 2010 was working with the BC Cancer Agency's mobile mammography screening program.

"It was a wonderful job. I travelled extensively throughout the BC Interior helping people," she says. "And it was a really great antidote for the health care system in the US, because most screenings in Canada are covered under our medial services plan and with that single payer system, every ounce of prevention saves on cure."

The Camosun College Chargers Men’s Golf team struck silver this weekend at the 2018 PACWEST Provincial Championships in Nanaimo, October 5-7 and with a Top 2 finish, the squad has booked their ticket to the CCAA National Golf Championships in Medicine Hat, AB October 15-19.

To better identify and respond to workforce training requirements, and as part of its commitments on the AJISS program, Thales Canada has signed an agreement with Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC), in partnership with Camosun College in British Columbia, to complete a bi-coastal analysis of the in-service support supply chain. Thales is the prime contractor for Canada’s AJISS program that will support the Royal Canadian Navy’s Arctic and Offshore Patrol Ships and Joint Support Ships built under the National Shipbuilding Strategy.

On Thursday October 18, 2018 at 10:20am,  Camosun will participate in the provincially coordinated ShakeOut earthquake exercise. Students, staff and faculty at both campuses will be alerted to Drop, Cover and Hold-On, evacuate buildings and go to a designated Emergency Assembly Point.

Shooting a two-day total of 618 at the University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) Invitational this past weekend, the Camosun Chargers Golf team has advanced to third overall as the PACWEST gears up for the Provincial Championships, October 5-7 at the Nanaimo Golf and Country Club.

With stands offering fresh local farm produce and booths set up for cooking demonstrations and information about sustainability, Camosun’s Lansdowne campus courtyard will transform into an interactive autumn farmers market open to everyone on Wednesday, October 3.

The Ship Repair Entry Level Training (SRELT) program was delivered as part of a four-year Aboriginal Marine Training and Employment Program (AMTEP) between the Coast Salish Employment and Training Society (CSETS), the Aboriginal Community Career Employment Services Society (ACCESS) and BladeRunners.

On September 28 many Camosun students, employees and community supporters will wear orange shirts to show their commitment to the principle that every child matters and to show support for those who attended residential schools and their families.

When Camosun Marketing & Communications Strategist Jonathan Ruhl sought opportunities for professional development, he knew he wanted community to be at the forefront. Hosted on the traditional territories of the Lekwungen and W̱SÁNEĆ people, the Camosun Farmers' Market will inspire and engage people by increasing access to local food, enhancing the student experience, and inviting the community to take part in a fun and engaging event. Local farmers and producers will have the opportunity to sell their goods as well as highlight how they are contributing to a more sustainable future.

Week two of PACWEST competition caught the Camosun men's golf team in the rough as newcomer squad members ironed out their first time game jitters while the team fought to a fifth place finish shooting a tournament total of 622 at the UBCO Invitational at the Okanagan Golf and Country Club, September 15-16.

The Camosun Chargers men's golf team made a solid start to the 2018 PACWEST season with a Top 3 finish at the Langara Invitational held at the Quilchena Golf and Country Club in Richmond, September 8-9.

Starting in 1974, Ken Steacy--Camosun instructor and co-founder of Camosun’s Comics & Graphic Novels program--earned acclaim as a professional comic book author, illustrator, art director, editor and publisher, chronicling the stories of Spider-Man, Harry Potter, Astro Boy and the characters from the Star Wars universe. His latest project, “War Bears” is a unique collaboration with legendary Canadian author Margaret Atwood.

Nathan Holder is a man of many talents. "I'm a tinkerer by trade," he says. "Right out of high school I worked as a machinist and millwright and I spent 13 years in the air force as a mechanic and instructor."

The public and the media are invited to attend the 2018 Mechanical Engineering Project Showcase. This special one-day event takes place at Camosun's Interurban Campus on Friday, August 24 from 10am to 2pm in the atrium of the Centre for Trades Education and Innovation (CTEI).

From September 4-6 the Camosun College family will be doing our best to welcome new and returning students to our campuses. We'll be out in full-force answering questions, providing directions, and handing out swag, snacks and information to support you during your first days at Camosun.

Camosun College's Interurban campus will be the site of Mind Over Metal from August 13-17, a week-long welding summer camp for students ages 12 to 15. Offered in partnership with the CWB Welding Foundation, the camp is free for attendees and is funded by the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation in conjunction with Seaspan.

For 30 years, the fine furniture program at Camosun College has been a place for students to explore their art through woodworking and joinery.

Some 500 graduates have gone on to careers in the industry across the Island and Lower Mainland, and in recognition of those achievements the college will exhibit the design work of 30 students at the University of Victoria’s Legacy Gallery, now on until Sept. 22.

Roshaan Ganief's business MokaJade Designs features lovingly-crafted and stylish wood products for the home and the office. "The only thing I don't make is furniture," she says "but I'm a fine woodworker and in my business I basically make lots of things that people haven't seen before, such as women's jewelry, men's accessories and magnet boards all out of wood."

Camosun Business Co-op student Robin Stone received dual honours this year as she was selected as both the National College Co-op Student of the Year and the Provincial (BC/Yukon) College Co-op Student of the Year for 2017. This is the 11th year in a row a Camosun student has been named the provincial co-op student of the year.

On June 12, Camosun's Athletic & Exercise Therapy (AET) Clinic hosted Dr. Cameron McCrodan, a North American specialist in neurovisual performance, who talked about vision and how it can impact concussion recovery.

Third year sheet metal apprentice Dean Gustin won a bronze medal at the 2018 Skills Canada National Competition in Edmonton, Alberta on June 4 and 5. After winning a gold medal at the Skills Canada British Columbia competition in April, Gustin had the opportunity to compete against apprentices from across the country in the Sheet Metal Work category.

Hundreds gathered on the shores of the Esquimalt Lagoon at Royal Roads University Thursday to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day on the traditional lands of the Xwesepsum (Esquimalt) and Lkwungen (Songhees) ancestors and families.

Camosun College is pleased to announce the appointment of Doug Hastie as Head Coach of the Chargers Golf program. Coach Hastie is a Class "A" member of the PGA of Canada and in 2016, was named the Vancouver Island Class "A" Professional of the Year. He is a PGA of British Columbia Teacher of the Year and was last year's recipient of the PGA of BC Professional Development Award.

Cam Russell and Ken Guenter will cap off their teaching careers with a retrospective exhibition celebrating 30 years of fine furniture instruction at Camosun.

The Culinary Arts production kitchen at Camosun Interurban has been buzzing lately as college and community volunteers cook together to provide fresh and healthy meals for The Mustard Seed and Food Share Network members with the aim of reducing food waste, notes Culinary Arts Chair Steve Walker-Duncan.

Camosun College and Nova Scotia Community College (NSCC) have signed an MOU agreeing to work together to create training opportunities in the marine sector and other areas of mutual interest. The three-year agreement includes marine and oceans academic education, industry training, and research collaborations.

Camosun College has named its latest capital building project The Alex & Jo Campbell Centre for Health and Wellness, after a visionary donation from Victoria's well-known Campbell family.

Camosun was honoured to receive two prestigious CICan Awards of Excellence this year. Two teams from Eyēʔ Sqȃ’lewen and the School of Trades and Technology were recognized at the conference for their exceptional work in the areas of Indigenous Education and Leadership Excellence.

Students from around British Columbia competed in an “Olympic” style trades and technology competition in Abbotsford on Wednesday, April 18. Half of the Camosun College competitors earned medals in the South Island category.

The president of the Vancouver Island Woodworkers Guild, Neil Bosdet, was on campus this week to present a cheque for $800 to purchase materials for Camosun's Fine Furniture program's Capstone Project and Exhibition.

BC's builders are enjoying a month in the spotlight as the province rallies to show support and appreciation for the 225,000 skilled tradespeople across BC, with an official "Construction Month" proclamation. As part of the local activities this month, Camosun is honouring Cori Coutts, KNAPPETT PROJECTS INC, with a Construction Leadership Award for her leadership in the sector and outstanding support of Camosun's Construction Programs.

Leaders in post-secondary education from across the country and around the world will be gathering at the Victoria Conference Centre from April 30 to May 1 for Colleges and Institutes Canada's (CICan) annual conference. Hosted by Camosun College, this year's conference theme is Na'tsa'maht, a Salish phrase meaning "working together as one."

Camosun College anthropology instructor Nicole Kilburn and 35 students from her Anthropology of Food class are organizing the third iteration of the college’s wildly popular “Pestival of Edible Insects” which takes place on Wednesday, April 4 from 7-9pm on the first floor of the Wilna Thomas building at Camosun’s Lansdowne campus.

Twenty-four Indigenous learners from the Songhees Nation will get the education and skills they need to thrive and succeed with the launch of the new culinary arts, hospitality and tourism management program.

On the heels of hosting its second consecutive national volleyball championship, Camosun College is pleased to introduce the addition of Women’s Curling to the Chargers 2017-18 season. Coached by Curl BC Coach and High Performance Director and former Olympian, Melissa Soligo, the four-woman squad (known as Team Reese-Hansen) will leave Victoria this week for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA)/Curling Canada Championships in Leduc, AB, March 24-28.

The Camosun Chargers Men’s Volleyball team completed a historic season in 2017-18, winning the PACWEST conference title for a fourth consecutive year, a feat not accomplished since the inception of the league in 1971. The team went on to a fourth place finish at the National Championship, hosted at Camosun College, losing 13-15 in the fifth set of a dramatic bronze medal match.

Camosun Chargers Men’s Basketball Head Coach Scot Cuachon knows that in the world of college hoops, change is inevitable.

With just one year under her belt and the PACWEST Championships on the horizon, Camosun Chargers basketball coach, Cait Haggarty, has the Chargers’ future looking bright. Beginning her coaching career at her alma mater, UBC, Haggarty returned to her hometown of Victoria to lead the Chargers to their first winning record in four seasons.

The Camosun College men's volleyball team claimed its fourth consecutive conference title on Saturday evening, defeating the Vancouver Island University Mariners in four sets (25-22, 26-24, 22-25, 25-14) at UFV’s Envision Financial Athletic Centre.

Camosun College officially opened the Houle Electrical Shop on Interurban campus this week, recognizing the contributions of valued donors Houle Electric and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 230. Both donors generously contributed $75,000 each towards the state-of-the-art 1,600 square metre shop.

Camosun Chargers men’s volleyball coach Charles Parkinson knows what it takes to win at an elite level. The Chargers are the reigning PACWEST champions for three years running, but as they prepare to defend their title this week at the University of the Fraser Valley, neither Coach Parkinson or his players are taking anything for granted.

Culinary Arts Chair Steve Walker-Duncan has spearheaded a 24-month partnership with Soup Sisters Victoria to produce fresh and healthy soups for the Victoria Women’s Transition House.

Sixteen Indigenous students have recently graduated from the Ship Repair Entry Level Training Program (SRELT), a collaborative marine industry training program, at the Camosun Coastal Centre on Songhees Nation Territory.

Dylan Marsden is passionate about sports and proud to be a 4th-year Camosun Charger basketball player. “Sports has the incredible power to bring people together,” he says. “Everyone loves something about sports and there's so much passion about sports that can involve and inspire everyone at the college.”

Camosun Chargers Volleyball player Stephanie Galitzine can’t remember a time when she didn’t play sports. “Even as a baby, my parents told me stories that I never stopped moving,” she says. “Sports have always been what I loved to do.”

Camosun College has been awarded $200,000 in start-up funding from the provincial Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training to support increased access to web technology and engineering graphics certificate programs. The new funding will allow Camosun to increase the capacity of these programs, adding 40 new spaces by the 2019/20 academic year.
