Hospitality and Tourism class act at School of Business awards ceremony

Business students’ achievements recognized by faculty, industry, donors and peers
Camosun College’s School of Business, in partnership with Camosun College Foundation, recognized student achievement at its annual awards ceremony Monday, November 29. This year, a record number of 105 students benefited from more than $60,650 in financial awards, prizes and scholarships.
Joan Yates, Dean of the School of Business, thanked the individuals, businesses, co-op employers, service clubs and professional associations that make it possible to generously recognize so many deserving students. "These dedicated supporters are truly our partners in ensuring that we provide Camosun graduates not only with the skills and professionalism needed in the workforce," says Yates, "but are the reason our students feel so warmly acknowledged and already connected to the world of business."
Awards recognizing hospitality and tourism students took centre stage at the November 29 event.
David Tarasoff, Quinn Manley and Troy Dunning
Three first-year students returning to second-year studies received Canadian Hospitality Foundation (CHF) scholarship awards. Kelsey Irwin, a Tourism Management student, was awarded $1500 and Hotel and Restaurant Management students, David Tarasoff and Quinn Manley, each received $2000.
David Tarasoff was also named the BC Hospitality Foundation’s (BCHF) 2010 Future Leadership $2000 scholarship recipient. Niranjala Storm, BCHF’s 2009 Future Leadership scholarship winner, was also presented with the Dunlop House Restaurant $300 award at last night’s event.
Nathan Bird received Tourism Victoria’s award of $350. This award is presented to the graduating student who has achieved the highest marks in the Tourism Management program. Bird has been accepted by Royal Roads University into the Masters in Tourism Management program.

"I would like to thank Tourism Victoria and Camosun College for this award," says Bird. "My passion is tourism and hospitality in Victoria, and to be recognized by the leading authority on tourism in this city is an honour!"
Special guests at the November 29 award ceremony included Maureen Kelly-Matyczuk, Director of the Victoria Guest Services Network. The Victoria Guest Services Network Award of Excellence, worth $500, was presented to Tourism Management student, Amanda Perri.
"The future of the hospitality and tourism industry is in fine hands, based on the expertise and professionalism of Camosun students," says Kelly-Matyczuk."Ms.Perri exemplifies the spirit, enthusiasm and proven ability to provide the level of excellence in customer service that the hospitality industry demands."
Camosun’s Golf Management program, part of the hospitality and tourism cluster at the college, meets the academic requirements for the Canadian Professional Golfers Association’s (CPGA) new PACE (Professional Advancement and Career Enhancement) education program. Andrew Connolly was the recipient of the $500 Brian McWha Memorial award, presented to a PACE student with the highest grade point average (GPA) currently enrolled full-time in the second year of the program.
Brett Gulevich and Aaron Tullikopf were each awarded $500 in the Jencess-Active Network Award presented to one or more third-year Golf Management students who have the highest GPAs in the two golf operations courses using the Active Network golf course management software.
Troy Dunning is the chair of Hospitality and Tourism programs at Camosun. "Our students benefit so much from real-world opportunities provided by the business community in Victoria," says Dunning."For example, starting in January, the Victoria Guest Services Network welcomes a Camosun Tourism Management student to their board. All of the hospitality and tourism programs offer exceptional co-op and internship work opportunities that are the result of community and business relationships, including the huge donor support that rewards student excellence."
