In an all-out battle for the title of “Best Fans on the Island”, a record crowd of 500+ spectators rocked a packed St. Margaret’s gym last weekend. Playing to a full house both Friday and Saturday nights, fans rowdily cheered for their favourite Vancouver Island BCCAA teams - the Camosun College Chargers and the Malaspina University College Mariners – and collected donations for the Mustard Seed.

Kicking off the season, the Chargers won a pair of basketball games but lost two in volleyball.

Despite record numbers, Camosun had to tip its hat to Malaspina’s “MALU-nation” fans who arrived armed with cheers, thundersticks, a trombone and their own blue-man group.

Both schools came through to earn points and raise goods and money for the Mustard Seed Food Bank Challenge, where fans and family of the Chargers and Mariners faced off to help those in need.

Mustard Seed representative Barb Ross was pleased with the results from the first-time Island Challenge event. “We were extremely happy with the enthusiasm to help the less fortunate. Everyone contributed in a big way, from Camosun’s Sport Ed students who approached us with the idea to hold the event to the friends and families who donated on behalf of the Chargers and the Mariners. We appreciate everything that was done for us, and possibly this event will spark other interest around sporting events.”

Although Malaspina won the weigh-in collecting 123 lbs. of food and $5 in cash, Camosun raised close to $164 in cash plus 74 lbs. of food. As far as naming a winner goes, Ross replied, “Money is always the way to go as we can purchase double for a dollar than the general public can.”

The Camosun Sport Education students along with the Chargers would like to extend a special thank you to the sponsors of the Island Challenge: Boston Pizza, Dairyland, The Keg, Thrifty's, Spankit Sports and Subway.
