The Camosun College Chargers volleyball teams may have lost their 2007-08 British Columbia Colleges' Athletic Association (BCCAA) season openers against arch rivals, the Malaspina Mariners, this past Saturday at St. Margaret's School, but according to the Camosun coaches, the weekend was a success.

The Chargers women fell 3-1 (25-13, 25-12, 28-30, 25-7) to the ever-strong Mariners, but not without a fight. Camosun Women's Head Coach, Alison Hitesman reported, "This is the first time in many years the Chargers have taken a set from Malaspina. It's a nice start to the season against a team that is the top class of the league."

Head Coach Linda Henderson agreed that it was a great start for her almost all-rookie team. "We showed how hard we work defensively and fought back from being down two sets to make it a match that could have gone either way."

The Chargers men played out a fantastic five-set match but eventually lost to the Mariners 3-2

(25-18, 25-23, 32-34, 26-28, 16-14).

Second-year middle, Allie Thomas (Frances Kelsey) made 10 super blocks in Saturday's match, earning first place on the list in the blocking category. First-year right-side, Garrett Marcellus (Oak Bay) joined fourth year left-side vet Dan Goodburn (Claremont) in placing in the top 15 of the digs, kills and aces categories.
