It was a banner evening for the Camosun College Chargers who won gold and defended their BCCAA Provincial Championship title this past Saturday at PISE in front of a roaring home crowd!

Aleks SaddlemyerWhen asked what it felt like to win gold and defend their BCCAA Championship in their home gym for the very first time, Chargers head coach Charles Parkinson expressed, “There’s nothing like it, especially with what’s going on in BC right now with the Olympics in Vancouver and the gold medals Canada has won and all that inspiration! It’s the feeling inside you when that last ball goes down … I am so proud of these guys!”

Taking home silver was the UFV Cascades – the team that Camosun defeated last year to earn the 2009 Championship which was hosted at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford.

The Chargers took down their familiar foes in three straight sets in Saturday’s final (26-24, 25-20, 25-23) and although Camosun maintained the lead all the way, head coach Charles Parkinson gave a lot of credit to the opposing team.

“I have to take my hat off to Fraser Valley,” said Coach Parkinson. “Their big middle Joel Ewald went down in the first set with a bad knee injury and was unable to return to the game. Coach Greg Russel did a great job of regrouping his team and they just sucked it up and started playing twice as hard. The way they composed themselves was really impressive!”

As the Provincial Champions, Camosun will represent BC at the CCAA National Men’s Volleyball Championship hosted by Grant MacEwan in Edmonton, March 11-13.

Playing out his final year, veteran Charger Brent Hall is aiming to end it on a high note. “We’ve been training hard the whole season and we have two more weeks left to just iron the wrinkles out,” commented the fifth-year left side player. “This year, we obviously want the gold. It’d be a great way to end my career so that’s what I’m shooting for.”

Coach Parkinson agreed, “We’ve got two weeks to fine tune some small things. I think now, it’s working on our head and our emotions. We want to be able to conjure up what we’re feeling tonight and take that to Alberta!”
