Chargers women’s volleyball team on the upswing

With only a few final confirmations to be made on the 2009-2010 Camosun squad, head coach Alison Hitesman and the Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball team are setting their sights on providing big challenges for the BCCAA’s top ranked colleges and taking their game to the 2010 Provincial Championships.
“We still have a few players to confirm but our current roster is long and strong,” commented Coach Hitesman. “We may have players from Ontario, Prince George and Saskatoon coming and I am hopeful they will prove to be as good or even surpass the performances of the players we have in house! The team is definitely on the upswing.”
Returning to play their 4th year at Camosun are power hitter Laura Ouilette (Lambrick) and rightside Caitlin Weir (Wellington, Nanaimo). Weir finished the BCCAA season first overall in service aces, 14th in kills and 12th in digs. Ouilette was 12th in kills and 7th in digs.
Adding dimension and fire power to the mix is Tanisha Marcelle (Spectrum) who was ranked as the league’s third top rookie in kills when she left the Chargers program in 2007. Back to help the team as a second-year player, Marcelle will work towards taking the lead as a dominant hitter in the league.
Being welcomed to the Chargers program are five Island student-athletes. Possessing a cannon serve, playing solid defense and making timely kills to round out her contributions to the team is Kelsey MacKenny from Alberni District Secondary School. Mackenny’s Nanaimo club team finished third this year at Provincials.
Also joining the Chargers are four recruits from the Vancouver Volleyball Association’s 18U's who are expected to challenge Camosun’s opponents and returning players and alike.
Kelsey Elder (Spectrum) is a dominant power hitter, server and passer whose all-around game makes her a consistent threat. Kelsey Fletcher (Spectrum) is coming in as a setter and will be learning the ropes and vying for court time against returning setter Brittanny Brook (Smithers Secondary).
Jen Swiatlowski (Oak Bay) will be joining her older sister and second-year Charger Deena Swiatlowski (Oak Bay) in the middle hitter position and will be challenging third-year Bethany Farnell (Highland, Comox) for the lead spot. Rounding out the talent is Kelly Koronko (Spectrum), a versatile player who stepped it up this season with her consistent play at the net and excellent passing skills.
While the Chargers women have missed the playoffs the last two years by just one spot, Coach Hitesman and her 2009-2010 players are confident that they will qualify this year and be a strong contender in the league.
