The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams are on the road today, making the gruelling trip up to Prince George as they face the University of BC Timberwolves in a pair of double headers at the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre this Friday and Saturday.

The weekend is a significant one for both teams. While the men seek at least a split to stay in the hunt for playoffs, the number one nationally-ranked Chargers women are focused on adding two more wins to their 9-0 league record and reaching long-awaited retribution after losing last year’s BCCAA Provincial title to the T-wolves 71-54. Fueled by sheer determination and 2,000 screaming fans, the T-wolves outscored the Chargers 22-4 in the third quarter of the 2008 Championship final and went on to victory, despite a brave come-back by the Camosun squad.

Currently sitting in second place in the BCCAA with an 8-1 record, the women T-wolves are at the heels of the first-place Chargers who remain undefeated in league competition.

“At this point, it’s anyone’s game,” remarked Camosun head coach Brett Westcott. “Last year, we entered provincials as the top seed with a 13-3 league record while UNBC, who went 11-5, were ranked second. Our season was split down the middle. We beat them 70-63 in November and they beat us 71-68 in February. The year prior to last, Camosun entered the 2007 BCCAA playoffs in sixth spot and pulled off the upset defeating a third-ranked UNBC 56-54 in a first round game.”

In volleyball action, the Chargers take on the UBC – Okanagan Heat this Friday night at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

With a league record of 2-8, the Chargers women have their work cut out for them as they confront the Heat who are 9-1 and the nation’s number one team.

Like their fellow women’s basketball counterparts, the Chargers men’s volleyball team is looking for a reprisal from the Heat (ranked #2 in the BCCAA and #4 nationally) following their 3-1 loss on UBC-O’s home turf in the first half of the season. Since that time, the Chargers have won all but one of their seven league matches, losing only to the nation’s number one team, the VIU Mariners. The Chargers took the Mariners to five extremely close sets, ultimately surrendering 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-13).

The Chargers’ past weekend wins against the Capilano Blues and the Douglas Royals maintains Camosun’s 4th place standing in the BCCAA and 12th place national ranking. Second-year left-side Aleks Saddlemeyer from the Chargers was named the BCCAA Men’s Volleyball Athlete of the Week for his outstanding performance which included a weekend total of 29 kills, 14 digs and seven blocks.
