Chargers save the best for last at RCGA University/College Championships
Despite a slow start to last week’s RCGA Canadian University/College Championships in Hamilton, Ontario, the Camosun College Chargers saved the best for last this past Friday, finishing the final day of play with the lowest individual men’s score and the fifth lowest team score of the day.
UBC ended the final day with a team total of 292, followed by Humber College with 294, Universite Laval with 302, University of Western Ontario with 305 and the Camosun Chargers with 306. Contributing to the Chargers’ success was first-year golfer Mat Hennick, a student in Camosun’s Professional Golf Management Program. Hennick had a superb day shooting 70 (-2) for the low score of the day.
The Championship, which was comprised of 20 men’s teams and 10 women’s, was shortened to 54 holes due to heavy rains on Thursday (Round 3). On the men’s side, first place went to UBC who ended the event with a three-day total of 857. Taking second, was Universite Laval, with 903 and tied for third was the University of Victoria and Humber College with team totals of 906. In women’s play, UBC took first with 921 followed by UVic with 946 and Humber with 996.
The first three rounds of the Championship were frustrating ones for the Chargers. The team shot 319 for 31 strokes over par on Day 1; Day 2 saw the Chargers improve at 22 strokes over par; and what could have been the Chargers best round on Day 3, didn’t make it to the scoreboard due to weather conditions that worsened part way through day.
The Chargers were just about to finish along with several other teams when RCGA officials deemed course conditions unplayable. “The guys were on the 18th fairway with four groups working back and just about finished when the skies opened up,” said Coach Randle. “The team was at even par with only a couple of holes left and would have moved way up and made the cut. It is very rare to have golf that has been played wiped off the board and we happened to be the unlucky ones.”
With the stroke of bad luck behind them, the Chargers came back on Day 4 to play their best game of the Championship. “I am proud of the guys for fighting hard and behaving like gentlemen,” said Coach Randle. “The fact that we finished ahead of six universities and 3 other colleges is pleasing, but we try to measure our performances against what we are capable of so I think the guys are disappointed. On the positive side, they learned a lot and will be better players in the future.”
