Chargers win bronze, stealing Algonquin’s Thunder

In four intensive sets, the Camosun College Chargers defeated the Algonquin Thunder to capture the 2008-09 CCAA Men’s Volleyball Bronze Medal (25-19, 25-19, 15-25, 25-20).
Despite almost dwarfing the Chargers at the net with players standing at 6’5” and 6’8”, the Thunder could not use their size to outplay the Camosun squad who took the first two sets by playing aggressively, serving tough and benefiting from their opponents’ serve/receive errors.
In the third set, Camosun fell behind as the Thunder dominated the game doing everything right. In the fourth, the Chargers were down 12-6 when head coach Charles Parkinson called a time out to regroup his players. After that, Camosun clawed their way back into the game to close the gap 13-12. From there, the game was neck and neck until the Chargers were only four points away from the bronze. Alex Saddlemeyer served up three points while the star of the match, Brent Hall, served to win the final and deciding point.
The road to bronze was a long one for the Camosun squad who lost their first round match to the host team, the Keyano Huskies. The day one loss forced the Chargers to aim for third place the hard way. Two days and three matches later, the Chargers are exhausted but elated to be bringing home some hardware.
While the CCAA bronze medal win is the first for second-year head coach Charles Parkinson and his crew, it is a feeling of reminiscence for former and long-time Chargers coach Linda Henderson who provided the color commentary for all but one of the Chargers matches (the bronze medal match) over the Championship event and who led the Chargers to their first National Bronze Medal in 2002-03.
“I am thrilled for the two graduating players, Dan Goodburn and Chris Abra,” commented Henderson. “As well, Aleks Saddlemeyer has improved his game over the past year and will be the Chargers new leader. My congratulations to the coaching staff of Charles Parkinson, Dan Casey and Dave Dooley. They have done a tremendous job!”
Replacing Henderson on the mic for the bronze medal match was Keyano Wall of Famer, Lorne Jacula who also has ties to Camosun as a 1993-94 alumnus.
Friends, family and fans are encouraged to help welcome the boys back home and congratulate them on a job well done! The Chargers fly home Sunday and arrive at the Victoria International Airport at 7:20pm.
