Back to back wins lead Chargers to Golf Nationals

With a season-opening second-place finish and two straight wins, the Camosun College Chargers golf team is leading the pack after BCCAA Tournament #3 and heading to the 2009 PING CCAA National Golf Championship, October 13-16 in Windsor, Ontario.
This past weekend, the Chargers picked up their second tournament win of the season at the Thompson Rivers University Invitational in Kamloops. With only one stroke separating each of the top three finishing teams, it was a tight race to the finish. Camosun took the win with a two-day total of 592, Thompson Rivers University finished with 593 and UBC-Okanagan ended with 594.
“We had a six shot lead over our nearest competition after Day 1,” commented Camosun head coach John Randle. “Day two proved to be a challenge as most of the guys were struggling to make putts on very fast and undulating greens. Thanks to our buffer from Day 1, we managed to hang on by one over TRU, the host school and by two over UBC-O.”
On Day 1 of the tournament, first-year Charger Brett Webster (Yale Secondary, Abbotsford) penciled in the lowest individual score of the BCCAA season to date – an outstanding 66! The Camosun rookie scored 71 on Day 2, earning the lowest individual score of the TRU Invitational with 137 strokes. With a cumulative total of 427 over three tournaments, Brett holds the top spot in the BCCAA men’s individual rankings – a position he has maintained for the second consecutive week.
Third-year veteran Kevin Walz tied for 12th with a tournament total of 151. He is tied for ninth place after three tournaments with a total of 453 on the BCCAA Cumulative League Leaders list. Newcomers Zander Ritson (Salt Spring Island) and Matt Tindale (Peterborough, Ontario) were tied for 16th spot at the tournament, each finishing with 152. Tindale is 11th on the League Leaders list with a three tournament total of 455; Ritson is 14th with 459.
The 2009 PING CCAA Golf Championship - three day tournament will be hosted by St. Clair College and is set to begin October 13th at the Ambassador Golf Club in Windsor, designed in 2005 by the award winning course designer Thomas McBroom.
The action will begin with the PING Skills Competition Tuesday morning before the practice round takes place to kick off the week. The Championship will feature over 100 of the top male and female collegiate golfers across Canada.
Confirmed to represent BC alongside the Chargers are the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades and defending National Champions, the TRU Wolf Pack. Despite the presence of some of the strongest programs in the country, including six-time CCAA National Champions – Humber College, Coach Randle is confident that the team will pull out all the stops at the big event.
“If we play up to our potential, I feel we can be very competitive. To win a national championship will take our good play and some good breaks. As I always say, if the guys try their best and give each shot their full commitment, I like our chances.”
