Carmen Lapthorne is making the most of her second year of post-secondary competition playing for the Camosun College Chargers. Last season, Lapthorne was named to the BCCAA All-Rookie Team. So far this year, the Mount Doug grad earned top honors as a BCCAA First Team All-Star and the Conference’s Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Carmen Lapthorne, BCCAA Athlete of the Week.In Camosun’s semi-final game at the BCCAA Championships this past Friday against Langara College, Lapthorne collected 22 points, five rebounds and four assists to help her team to a 76-49 victory and a spot in the Gold Medal game.

On Saturday night, the first-seeded Chargers faced the number two team, the UNBC Timberwolves in a re-match of last year’s BCCAA Championship Final. Despite losing to UNBC in 2008 and settling for silver, the Chargers turned it all around this year defeating the T-Wolves 77-61 and coming home with gold! Lapthorne scored 11 points, four rebounds and three assists to help the Chargers women collect the program’s first ever BCCAA Provincial title.

Shooting 13 /24 from the field, including 5 /12 from the three-point line, Lapthorne demonstrated a very efficient performance over the Championship weekend.

“Carmen played really well in both games during the playoffs,” stated head coach Brett Westcott. “She answered a late UNBC comeback attempt in the final with a big three-pointer with about five minutes remaining, which stopped the final UNBC threat of the night. She was our security blanket all weekend and the girls play better when she plays well. This weekend was a great way to cap off her College career as she moves to play at the CIS level next season.”

The Chargers now head to Sainte Foy, Quebec for the CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championships, March 18-21, 2009.
