Camosun College ChargersThe Camosun College Chargers women’s volleyball program in conjunction with the Victoria Volleyball Association (VVA) are excited to offer local sport fans an opportunity to catch some top notch v-ball action at their first Women’s 18U Tournament on Saturday, April 4 at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence.

VVA President Mike Toakley and Boys’ Coordinator Al Carmichael have been working closely with the Chargers to promote and develop top athletes in Victoria to become some of BC's top volleyball players. Featured in this Saturday’s tournament are four of the province’s top ranked Volleyball BC 18&U Club teams from the Island including top 10 finishers of the VBC Youth Club Team Super Series held last month in the Fraser Valley, Nanaimo (#7), Victoria VVA Chargers U18-A (#8) and Comox (#10). The Victoria VVA Chargers U17-A team finished third in their last province-wide event and will also be a team to watch at this tournament. The competition will provide them with a chance to experience to play some quality 18U teams as they head into the 17U Provincial Championships April 18-19 in Nanaimo.

The Women’s 18U Tournament will also be used as an identification camp for potential Chargers athletes. “There are several potential recruits that we’ll be scouting out”, commented Chargers head coach and VVA Vice President, Alison Hitesman. “We’ll see which players make a mark to compete with us next season.”

Assisting Hitesman in the Camosun/VVA endeavor to boost the development of youth volleyball both locally and province-wide, is former Chargers women’s head coach Marty Donatelli who will be coaching the Victoria VVA Chargers U17-B and U15 teams. Camosun Chargers power hitters, third-year Laura Ouilette (Lambrick) and second-year Bethany Farnell (Highland) are also pitching in, assisting Donatelli with the two teams. “Putting our student-athletes to work is a great way to ensure that youngsters receive some of the best role models and coaching there is to offer,” said Hitesman who will contribute her help and expertise to the 18U teams and the 17A team as an associate coach.
