Chargers women’s basketball crew continues to break program records

Head coach Brett Westcott and the Camosun Chargers women’s basketball crew are on their way to another year of record-breaking endeavors by remaining undefeated for the first half of the BCCAA league season and reaching an all-time high, national standing of number two in the country. Both are first-time feats among all the Chargers programs.
The team’s 6 wins and 0 losses record upholds Camosun’s first-place standing in the British Columbia Colleges’ Athletic Association (BCCAA) and elevates the team from last week’s third place position on the national rankings to the number two spot.
Though Camosun’s six consecutive wins were earned against teams currently sitting closer to the bottom of the BCCAA standings, Chargers head coach Brett Westcott feels that the team’s first place position is an accurate assessment of where it should be in proportion to its’ overall performance in league and exhibition activities this year.
"I think we have shown we can play with everybody in the league this season if we decide to work hard and to execute properly,” commented Westcott. “We have played seven of the other nine teams in the league so I think we have earned some respect. We also have great respect for everybody we play as everybody can beat everybody else on any given weekend. Just look at Quest thumping Douglas by 18 points this past weekend!”
Over the next several weeks, the Chargers will be practicing and preparing for the second half of the season. Included in the team’s scheduled list of activities are two exhibition tournaments – the first running December 27-29 (the Chargers Third Annual Christmas Classic Tournament) and the second taking place January 2-4, hosted by Kwantlen Polytechnic University.
When asked which teams in the upcoming exhibition tournaments the Chargers will most look forward to competing against, Coach Westcott replied, "Anytime you get to play teams from outside your own conference there is an extra incentive. I think we will really look forward to playing Medicine Hat at our tournament on December 29. We feel like they stole our wildcard berth into the national championship tournament last season so we want to make sure that type of decision does not reoccur. Otherwise, we will look forward to playing some different teams which we anticipate will create a spark of interest among fans in the community during the holidays."
Once BCCAA league play resumes in the New Year, the Chargers will meet up with three of their strongest rivals, among them: Island rivals, the Vancouver Island University Mariners (#4 in the standings); the UNBC Timberwolves (currently #3 and the team that defeated Camosun at last year’s BCCAA Championships, denying them of the gold); and the Capilano Blues (#2 - the team Camosun defeated this Fall to win the Capilano Blues Classic Tournament).
“With tougher competition in the New Year, we just have to get better,” stated Westcott. “Better at executing our various systems, better at playing team defence, better at being more consistent and better at cutting down on our unforced errors in games. We want this break from our league schedule to be productive as we know we have three really tough league weekends in a row once we start playing again."
While practice makes perfect, Westcott and his current squad are looking forward to enlisting the talents of three additional players over the Christmas break to help strengthen the team for the Winter 2009 season. "We should get both Christine Ireland and Kymber Gale back from corrective arthroscopic knee surgery by mid-December,” said Westcott. “They need to get some practice time so they can play in the holiday tournaments and then hopefully give us a boost for the next part of our league schedule. Julia Fisher has an appointment with her surgeon December 16 and we are hoping she gets clearance to start playing as she has been out of action for almost 14 months now since tearing her ACL. If she can come back to play, she would be a pleasant addition providing some additional frontcourt support. So, let’s hope that Santa Claus is good to us over the next several weeks!"
