Camosun College officially opened the Houle Electrical Shop on Interurban campus this week, recognizing the contributions of valued donors Houle Electric and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 230. Both donors generously contributed $75,000 each towards the state-of-the-art 1,600 square metre shop.

In operation since September 2017, the bright new facility is almost twice the size of the old shop and is designed to encourage collaboration. It’s equipped with an additional $250,000 worth of equipment, replacing more than 80% of the old equipment (some of which dated back to the 1970s) and bringing Camosun’s Electrical programs up to current technological standards.

“In the new shop, I’ve had the pleasure of using and working with the latest machines and tools,” says Electrical Foundations student, Justin Taylor. “I came to Camosun to get solid training and insightful instruction, and I got so much more.”

Camosun is the largest provider of trades training on Vancouver Island, and is a recognized provincial and national educational leader in trades education. The college’s Electrical programs train approximately 100 foundation students and 600 apprentices each year.

“This new training shop is a tremendous example of the kind of difference donor investment can make for our students,” says Camosun College President Sherri Bell. “It’s really an investment in our skilled workforce and in the human potential of our province.”

The donation was part of the TRADEmark of Excellence Campaign, the Camosun College Foundation’s enormously successful effort to create a trades education powerhouse on the college’s Interurban campus. The two-year campaign attracted strong community support, surpassing the original $5 million goal by 50% to reach $7.5 million raised.
