Camosun chef is honoured with the prominent Harbourside Victoria Rotary award

Chef Gilbert Noussitou accepted the Paul Harris Fellowship Award presented June 18 by the Harbourside Victoria Rotary for significant contributions to benefit local and international communities.

"Harbourside Victoria Rotary does not present the Paul Harris Fellowship Awards every year," says Ann Moskow, Chair of the Cakes from Rotary Committee. "We only award this when we believe that there are truly worthy recipients."

"It was a great honour to be presented with the Paul Harris Fellowship award," says Noussitou, Chair of Culinary Arts. "The production of thousands of Christmas cakes may seem like a 'piece of cake' but the funds raised go a long way in supporting the many events and projects the Rotarians are organizing throughout the region. This award makes us proud and reinforces the important role Camosun College and Culinary Arts play in our community."

Through a partnership between Camosun's Culinary Arts programs and the Harbourside Victoria Rotary, the Camosun instructors helped produce Christmas cakes that were sold by the Rotarians to raise funds for numerous community projects. Noussitou credits Chef Steve Walker Duncan and the Culinary Arts department for helping raise thousands of dollars for worthwhile causes. The funds went to support a variety of local projects including expanding youth suicide prevention through NEED2 Suicide Prevention, the creation of a Naturalized Play Area for Central Middle School, supporting the Victoria Brain Injury Society's music therapy /therapist program, and many others.

In honour of the award, the Harbourside Victoria Rotary also donated $1,000 to The Rotary Foundation, portions of which come back to the club in the way of matching grants. In past years, matching grants have allowed Harbourside to support several international organizations.
