Trades and Technology Career Fair at Interurban campus, Thursday, January 30, 2014

Looking forward to meeting hundreds of Camosun students and graduates, 27 employers have signed up for Camosun's Trades and Technology Career Fair this Thursday, January 30, 2014. Hosted by Camosun's Co-operative Education and Student Employment office, this annual event is scheduled for 10am-2pm in the Technologies Building at Interurban Campus.

The career fair offers a unique opportunity for prospective employers and future employees to connect.  Students and alumni seeking jobs and career advancement are encouraged to show up with resumes highlighting their skills and credentials; employers who need to recruit a skilled workforce are given a chance to promote their companies as desirable places to work.

"Employers are making plans now to avoid the anticipated skilled labour shortage," explains Gloria Daroch, Camosun's director of co-operative education and student employment. "They have learned from experience that the applied nature of Camosun's programs leads to excellent employees."

In addition to looking for grads and alumni to hire, many employers are also hoping to find students for short-term project work. Through co-operative education and internships, students supplement their learning with industry-relevant paid work experience. Because these short-term work arrangements allow the employer and employee to get to know each other, it is not uncommon for these work terms to lead to permanent employment after the student graduates.

"Work is a very big part of our lives," says Darroch, "and the employer-employee relationship needs to be a good match. As much as the employer wants to hire the right employee, it's just as important for employees to find work that allows them to thrive. This career fair introduces people so the conversations can begin."
