Camosun president Kathryn Laurin re-appointed to second term

The Camosun College Board of Governors has re-appointed President Kathryn Laurin to serve a second five-year term, starting July 1, 2014. "In just four short years, Kathryn and her team have raised Camosun's profile through strategic advocacy, solid stewardship, and a determined focus on the learner experience," says Board Chair Marilyn Pattison.

Under Laurin's leadership, Camosun adopted an ambitious five-year strategic plan and continues to make gains on its four pillars: Life-changing Learning, Culture of Excellence, Engaged Community and Sustainable Results. "The outcomes have been impressive," says Pattison. "In spite of a challenging economic climate, Kathryn has led the college to record international registrations, overseen advances on the education plan and spearheaded the trades building renewal at Interurban Campus.  With the encouragement and support of the Board, Kathryn has raised the profile of the college in the broader community and this has been of great benefit in gaining acknowledgement and support for our vital role in post-secondary education and the economy of Greater Victoria. Going forward, this focus will continue while at the same time Kathryn will be addressing the urgent and important challenges we face within the college."

On October 1, 2009, Laurin became Camosun's fifth president since incorporation in 1972. The timing and decision for this announcement is determined by the board-approved procedures on presidential review and re-appointment.

"It's a tremendous honour to be invited to serve a second term as Camosun's president," says Laurin. "I continue to be inspired by the passion and commitment of faculty and staff, and the remarkable accomplishments—academic, cultural, experiential—of our students. But Camosun is at an important juncture in our history and there is still much to accomplish. I'm ready for the next stage, and I'm excited to continue this journey with the Camosun community."

In addition to her leadership duties at Camosun, Laurin is actively engaged in regional economic development and national post-secondary advocacy. She acknowledges the Board of Governor's role in encouraging and supporting her to pursue these critical initiatives. "It all contributes to our vision and reputation of being Canada's college of life-changing learning, and enabling our students to 'change everything,' " says Laurin.
