Camosun student receives BC’s College Co-operative Student of the Year award
March 21, 2013
Camosun Environmental Technology student Nathan Fisk is the recipient of the 2012 College Co-op Student of the Year award, presented by the Association of Co-op Education-BC/Yukon. The prestigious award recognizes Nathan’s outstanding work as a Garry Oak ecosystem recovery technician at the Fort Rodd Hill and Fisgard Lighthouse National Historic Site in Victoria.
Nathan returned to college after receiving a bachelor’s degree from the University of Waterloo. When deciding to continue his education, he specifically looked for co-operative learning opportunities to help launch his environmental technology career. Not only has the co-operative education experience helped expand Nathan’s academic knowledge, it has left a positive impact on the national historic site.
“In addition to important projects like propagating native species—resulting in significant cost-savings for Parks Canada—Nathan’s level of professionalism shines when he represents Parks Canada to the general public,” says Gloria Darroch, Director of Co-operative Education & Student Employment. “His success emphasizes the value a co-operative education student brings to the workplace, making Nathan an excellent ambassador for the co-operative education movement.”
Beyond his work with Parks Canada, Nathan is a dedicated volunteer with Camosun’s Students for Environmental Awareness group and the Victoria Compost Education Centre, all the while maintaining an overall 91% average and making the Dean’s List.
Nathan received his award during National Co-Op Week, which runs March 18 through 22.
