Capstone Symposium showcases Camosun student tech talent

Pacific Forestry Centre, 506 West Burnside Rd, Victoria
- a mobile app that controls the lights, heat and electronic blinds in your home
- an aerial drone that picks up and drops objects, avoiding collision using GPS navigation
- a new web portal for the Lkwungen Nation
- a remote automated weather station
- a personal athletic data logger that records your heart rate during your workout
These are just a few of the projects on display at the Capstone Symposium scheduled for 9am-3:30pm, Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at the Pacific Forestry Centre, 506 West Burnside Road, Victoria, BC. Organized by the graduating students, Capstone is the last stage before graduation from two diploma programs: Computer Systems Technology and Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology – Renewable Energy.
"Making a real-world connection is a valuable aspect of Capstone," says Saryta Schaerer, program chair for Camosun's computer science department. "Each Computer Systems Technology team has a sponsor who is depending on these students to create a functional solution that can be applied to some aspect of their organization."
Two guest speakers have been invited: Darren Beckwith, Product Designer and Senior Firmware Lead at Carmanah Technologies will start things off at 9:30am and George Walker, Software Manager from Reliable Controls will be first up after lunch at 12:30pm. Student teams will each give 15-minute presentations from 10am-noon and 1-3:30pm.
