March 30, 2012 at Interurban campus
March 28, 2012
About 300 secondary and middle school students will experience competition and fun in a variety of trades and technology activities, March 30, 2012 at Camosun's Interurban campus. This three-in-one event will introduce younger students to aspects of trades and technology careers, while secondary students showcase their skills in competition for gold, silver and bronze medals.
Regional Skills Competition
The Skills Canada BC South Vancouver Island Regional Competition will bring about 60 secondary students to campus for the day, each competing in one of six trades skills competitions. Gold medal winners will then represent the south Island region at the Skills Canada BC provincial competition in Abbotsford, April 30.
Junior Skills Contest
More than 40 middle school students will test their creativity in the Junior Skills Spaghetti Bridge Building contest. The bridges will be judged for their design elements and then be put through a strength test to see how much weight they can hold before smashing into bits of broken pasta.
Try-a-Skill Activities
About 250 Grade 8 students will visit the campus as contest spectators and also to participate in a variety of hands-on Try-a-Skill activities.
"The south Island regional skills competition is an annual event," says Kelly Betts, coordinator for the South Island Partnership. "By building on that activity, we also have a great opportunity to showcase trades and technologies to younger students." The South Island Partnership (SIP) brings Camosun College together with five school districts: Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, Gulf Islands and Cowichan Valley, to create seamless transitions between high school and college.
The various activities take place between 9am and 3pm. Two awards ceremonies follow at 2pm and 3:30pm. Detailed agenda...
