FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Camosun’s Women in Trades Exploration Program is a 12-week introduction to the world of trades, and the wide array of rewarding careers available to skilled workers. Using a hands-on approach, students will learn about practical skills and industry requirements for a variety of trades in the construction, service, manufacturing and aerospace sectors. Students will also explore how to secure employable skills and further training.
Graduates of this exploration and preparation program will have the insights and experience to make informed decisions about choosing a training and career path in key trades like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, sheet metal, welding and mechanical. Graduates may seek entry into one of Camosun’s Trades Foundation training programs or seek employment with prospective trades employers.
The Women in Trades Exploration Program is for women who are curious about the trades, but who need to upgrade their qualifications in math and English, or who are unsure about which trade is the most suitable for them. “Trades careers are a great choice for women,” says Olaf Nielsen, Camosun College’s trades training and development co-ordinator. “Our students are often surprised at how creative and challenging it can be to build something from conception through to completion. It’s so satisfying to look at a finished building and say, ‘I helped build that!’ ”
In addition to providing relevant and up-to-date instruction from highly qualified instructors, the Women in Trades Exploration Program offers financial assistance to cover tuition, books, tools and clothing to eligible applicants. Check out the website for more information about the exciting opportunities in the world of skilled trades.
