Five courses now offered at WestShore Centre for Learning and Training

Camosun is now offering more courses for West Shore residents who want to attend college without driving into town. Starting January 31, Camosun will run five university transfer courses at the WestShore Centre for Learning and Training.
"We offered two courses in the fall and both filled up quite quickly," says Stan Chung, Camosun's dean of arts and science. "That was very encouraging, and clearly tells us that West Shore residents want their community college in their community."
Classes will be offered in the evenings for the convenience of learners who work during the day. They start a month later than on-campus courses in order to parallel the semester schedule of local high schools. "We also want current grade 12 students to consider the West Shore options," says Chung. "This is a great way for high school students to get a head start on their college education."
In order to encourage grade 12 students to get that head start, Camosun and Sooke School District 62 have set up a special dual-credit process that will allow high school students, with the written support of a teacher or counsellor, to register for the West Shore courses while still finishing high school. Dual credit is one of the benefits available through the South Island Partnership, which includes Camosun College and the five south Island school districts.
Because of its versatility, English 150 - English Composition will be offered again as one of the five courses. English 150 is equivalent to first-year university English and transfers into every university and college in BC. It is a required course within many of Camosun's diploma programs, such as Business Administration, Criminal Justice , Environmental Technology , Nursing, and Sport Management , just to name a few. As a prerequisite for many post-secondary courses, it opens academic doors in all areas of humanities , social sciences and degree programs.
The five courses will be held in one of two facilities run by the WestShore Centre for Learning and Training: at 814 Goldstream Avenue or in the Annex on 2139 Sooke Road.

Indigenous Studio Art – ART 106-001
(transfers to UVic, Emily Carr and many more)
Designed to introduce you to the indigenous approaches to studio art, this weekly 4-hour studio-based course will allow you to discover the transformative power of creativity through traditional indigenous art forms. Masks, drums, button blankets and storytelling are all traditional forms for indigenous cultures but how are these still relevant today?

The Criminal Justice System – CRIM 154-002
(transfers to UVic, SFU, UBC and more)
This course examines the 'nuts and bolts' of the Canadian Criminal Justice system and encourages discussion and critique. You'll analyze who does what (policing, courts, corrections) and look at how the system is supposed to function efficiently in our society. Your final project will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of how an accused person moves through the justice system from first point-of-contact with police to incarceration.

English Composition – ENGL 150-032

This is a required course in almost all university and college programs and is equivalent to first-year university English. Develop your writing skills and learn to write in an organized, clear and effective manner. The course will prepare you to succeed in academic writing and research as well as critical thinking.

Creative Writing: Fiction 1 – ENGL 154-002

Taught in a workshop style, this creative writing course will give you the opportunity to develop prose-writing skills with a focus on short stories. You'll learn about the literary elements of fiction and apply them to your own writing. Peer and instructor feedback are a central part of the course.

Child Development – PSYC 150-003

Discover how children grow and develop physically, intellectually, emotionally, psychologically and socially from infancy to middle childhood. There will be an emphasis on a child's needs at any given age and stage, with a discussion on how these needs can best be met.
