The Camosun College Chargers took a short break from cramming for their exams to provide CHEK's 17th Annual Salvation Army Charity Drive-Thru event with some much needed help and muscle power last Friday evening at the Accent Inn in Victoria. Teaming up with volunteers from CHEK 6, Accent Inns and the Salvation Army, the Chargers helped load almost eight tons of donated items and food from a very generous Victoria community.
Two Salvation Army trucks were filled to the brim with goods for the needy. A five-ton truck was filled with toys, clothing and household items while a three-ton truck was filled with non-perishable food items.
"We've been doing this for 17 years and this has been the most successful ever," exclaimed CHEK 6 News Director Rob Germaine.
John Espley from the Accent Inns was also impressed with the turn-out of donors and volunteers. "This is the third year we've had the privilege of hosting this event and we couldn't be happier," he said. "We live in a great community and events like this show how easily we can come together to make amazing things happen."
Mr. Espley added, "The Chargers really answered our call for help ... it was great to see how genuinely excited the student-athletes were to help in any way they could and how terrific they were at interacting with the other volunteers and especially the donors. They made a huge contribution to the event and we can't thank them enough for all their help!"
