Eight project teams have been busy over the summer designing, building and perfecting some fascinating inventions, including an electric motorcycle, a solar-powered engine, an all-terrain robotic vehicle and a flying saucer. Project descriptions...
“These projects allow the students to hone some very marketable skills,” explains Jeffrey Stephen, faculty advisor for the Mechanical Engineering Technology program.“Local industry is desperate for employees with hands-on experience in manufacturing and programming. But employers will find our graduates also bring a lot of other skills needed for project management, team building and client relations.”

Industrial Food Dehydrator
Sponsored by Spinnakers Brew Pub, this machine stores locally grown produce for out-of-season use. An LCD display controls the air speed and heat specific to the produce being dehydrated.
Electric Motorcycle Conversion
With a new, environmentally friendly electric drive system, this Honda 1000cc motorcycle is capable of highway speeds for daily commuting.
All Terrain Robotic Vehicle
Using two stationary tracks coupled with independently positioned tracked arms, this robotic vehicle will navigate all dry terrain including stairs and rocks.
Pyrolytic BioChar Oven
Biochar is the result of “combusting” organic matter without using oxygen, reducing the amount of carbon dioxide emissions.
On Demand Hot Water System
This under-the-counter heating system reduces energy loss that occurs when unused hot water is left in home piping systems. The temperature and flow rate can be specified by the home-owner.
Coanda Effect Flying Saucer
This remote-controlled flying saucer uses a 120cc model plane engine and a custom molded fiberglass shell. A variable position pendulum and multiple rudders control the pitch, roll and yaw.
Solar Powered Stirling Engine
This external combustion engine is powered by using an old satellite dish to concentrate the sun’s radiation to a single focal point. The creative design and extremely precise machining combine to maximize the efficiency of the engine.
Grey Water Recovery System
This system recovers and treats residential grey water for irrigation and toilet use, while recovering heat energy from drainage hot water that would otherwise be washed down the sewer pipes.
