Soapbox Races & Community Picnic

June 14, 2008 @ the Vancouver Island Technology Park

The Canary Derby provides an opportunity for the Vancouver Island Community to join forces with the Canary Foundation and BC Cancer Foundation to help support early detection of cancer research within BC.

This year's fundraising goal is $150,000 and all the money will go directly to purchasing needed equipment.

Equipment needed to Help Early Detection Research

Infrared ImagerInfrared Imager
Cost: $65,000

The first step in cancer biomarker validation for most biomarker candidates is the development of an assay to measure the biomarker in the blood or other fluids. Only then can the biomarker be either eliminated or advanced as a candidate for an early detection panel such as ovarian, pancreatic, prostate or lung cancer. An infrared imager is superior to the conventional chemiluminescence currently used in western blot protein analysis. This new imager will provide infrared detection which is used in critical components of early detection biomarker validation, such as fluorescent gel-shift assays, protein arrays and more.

Microplate ReaderMicroplate Reader
Cost: $85,000

A multi-detection microplate reader allows homogenous and heterogeneous biochemical or cell-based microplate assays to be performed on one flexible system. The optics on this piece of equipment provide optimal assay performance, resulting in more precise readings and in reagent savings.
