Camosun College Lecture Series

Series outlines how local developments in sport technology and wellness education have national and international benefits.

January 4, 2008

Athletes who reach the international podium often have a technological edge. The latest innovation may have made them 1/100th of a second faster than their next-place competitor.

Camosun College is pleased to present two special lectures this January outlining what’s under development in sport technology now, and at the future Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence, plus the national and international significance of these local innovations.

Sport performance experts, Dr. Tim Walzak and Dr. Gordon Sleivert, co-present "Playstation to Podium", the first in a series of Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence lectures through Continuing Education at Camosun College. The lectures are part of the College’s overall sport and wellness education programming and are designed to be of interest and value to athletes, health professionals, coaches, parents and teachers.

"Understanding and developing our physical literacy pathways will become increasingly important," says Sleivert. "The connections between sports technology, innovation and health are important to peak performance athletes and the well-being of all Canadians."

Playstation to Podium: Part 1 is scheduled Thursday, January 17 from 7 to 9pm and provides strategies for how athletes, coaches and individuals can reach personal bests.

Playstation to Podium: Part 2 runs Thursday, January 31 from 7 to 9pm. Technology is a two-sided beast. On one hand, it has been blamed for increasing sedentary lifestyles – but on the other, it has greatly enhanced quality of life. This lecture demonstrates how technologies enhance athletic performance, and how they can also be used to achieve personal performance goals whether in sport, health or work.

The lectures cost $15 + GST each, and take place at Camosun’s Interurban Campus. Pre-registration is required by phoning 250–370–3550 or online.
