The Camosun College Chargers basketball teams kicked off the 2007-08 British Columbia Colleges' Athletic Association (BCCAA) season with a pair of wins in the first-ever Island Challenge against arch rivals, the Malaspina Mariners, this past Friday at St. Margaret's School.

Tipping off to a record smashing crowd of 500-plus fans, the Chargers women led the Mariners from a half-time score of 28-23, all the way to a 67-51 win. Despite the 16-point win, Camosun head coach Brett Westcott paid his respects to the losing team.

"Mal has a veteran lineup that does not rattle and does not give up," he said. "Teams need to be ready for a battle because they're big and strong inside and they have depth on the perimeter. I'm just glad we don't need to see them again for a while now."

The men's game was a nail-biter, with Camosun and Malaspina tying at the half (34-34) and both teams battling for supremacy. In the last 30 seconds of the game, the Chargers scored four points to pull out the 81-78 victory.

Chargers Head Coach Gord Thatcher called the game a gutty win. "It was a very exciting game as neither team could really take control. Brian Waterman's scoring really kept us in the game in the first half as Jeff Spoor had to sit with foul trouble. Max Bell scored all 12 of his points in the second half and really stepped up defensively. Jeff Spoor also demonstrated why he is one of the best lead guards in the league," said Thatcher.

Six local student-athletes from the Chargers program made their debut appearance on the 2007-08 BCCAA Individual League Leaders list:
