Canada's top sheet metal apprentice trained at Camosun

Victoria's Casey Wilson is Canada's new champion sheet metal apprentice. Wilson defeated ten other apprentices from across Canada to win the annual competition held in Niagara Falls on July 19 and 20, organized by the Sheet Metal Workers Canadian Council.
To earn the top title, Wilson had to demonstrate superior math, trigonometry and craftsmanship skills through a written theory exam, a practical exam involving drafting and pattern development and a shop project that required working with copper, a material that demands highly developed hand skills.
"Casey has the talent, drive and intelligence to really succeed in this field," said sheet metal instructor Ken MacDonald, who taught Wilson throughout his apprenticeship. "Of course we're all extremely proud of his accomplishment, but I'm not at all surprised."
Wilson's employer is Associated Sheet Metal, a local company located in Keating Industrial Park on the Saanich Peninsula. This family-owned business specializes in high-end custom fabrication and welding of light gauge stainless steel and aluminum components for the commercial construction, electrical, food service, marine, and high tech industries.
"Because we specialize in custom fabrication, we need very highly skilled employees," said Fred Farmer, co-owner of Associated Sheet Metal. "Casey is proof that Camosun provides excellent technical training and I'd certainly hire Camosun's students in the future."
Wilson completed his fourth and final level of apprenticeship training at Camosun this past March, which prepared him to write and pass the inter-provincial exam. With his new Red Seal Journeyman status, Wilson is qualified to work anywhere within Canada.
In addition to the four levels of apprenticeship classes, Camosun teaches a six-month Sheet Metal Technician foundations program that introduces students to the skills needed to get started in the commercial and aircraft sheet metal industries. The next class starts in September 2007 and space is still available.
