Camosun is receiving over $29 million from the Ministry of Advanced Education to renew and enhance its existing Trades facilities at the Interurban campus.

The new Minister of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology John Yap and Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Ida Chong were on campus today to announce the funding. "Under the BC Jobs Plan, and as part of our recently announced Skills and Training Plan, we want to encourage more and more young people to consider careers in the trades," says Minister Yap. "With every investment in facilities, equipment and programs, we're sending an important message: choosing a trade is a very smart choice, offering a secure, rewarding and respected career."

"This revitalization project will enable Camosun to better meet the existing demand for trades education in BC and increase capacity in emerging trades central to our local economy, such as ship building and marine trades, resource infrastructure, sustainable construction and manufacturing technology," says Camosun President Kathryn Laurin.

Camosun's trades programs are currently housed in buildings that are more than 40 years old. The provincial funding will assist the college to create a state-of-the-art "Trades Learning Centre for Excellence."

"Currently Camosun is the most comprehensive and largest provider of trades training on Vancouver Island; more than 2,200 students per year in 20 different trades foundation and apprenticeship programs," says Eric Sehn, Dean of the School of Trades and Technology. "We are a leader in Canada and nationally recognized and awarded for achievements in trades and technology innovation. We are also a very important access centre for applied research in manufacturing and prototyping."

The new Trades Learning Centre for Excellence will be built to LEED gold standards and includes:

  • A new Marine and Metal Trades Centre - to house Welding, Sheet Metal, Metal Fabrication & Ship Building and Repair programs (where Tillicum Lodge is currently)
  • A new Mechanical Trades Centre -to house Heavy Duty/Commercial Truck Transport & Automotive Service Technician programs (where Tillicum Lodge is currently)
  • Repurposing the Jack White Trades Building - as a revitalized Sustainable Construction and Renewable Energy Trades Centre - to house Electrical, Plumbing and Piping Trades, and future Renewable Energy programs.
  • Repurposing the John Drysdale Trades Building as a new Technology and Innovation Centre - Carpentry and Joinery programs may stay here (TBA). This facility will also house a general purpose classroom space and trades equipment storage.
  • A new central student commons facility to serve the combined trades centres
  • Expanded and reconfigured trades yard space, outdoor storage and construction project areas with improved accessibility.
  • Critical upgrades to electrical service for existing trades buildings.

The project begins this fall with the deconstruction of the old Tillicum Lodge off Markham Road.

Camosun trades students go on to become carpenters, welders, plumbers and pipefitters, electricians, automotive service technicians, furniture makers, horticulture technicians, heavy duty mechanics, professional chefs, ship builders and more. Alumni are currently working in BC and around the globe for companies that include: BC Hydro, Department of National Defence, Viking Air, BC Ferries, BC Transit, and Seaspan Victoria Shipyards.
