Camosun College business students place first in CMA BC case competition

Four Camosun business students took the top prize at the sixth annual Certified Management Accountants Society of BC case competition held at SFU earlier this month. Competing against 30 other teams of first- and second-year students from BC's universities and colleges, the Camosun team demonstrated exceptional management skills by analyzing a fictional business case of Sarah's Antiques.
Students were given one day to work on their case assignment before they had to present to the company's fictional senior management (the CMA BC judges) on a recommended solution for the company. The competition provided participating students with an understanding of challenges and issues faced by management. It also provided an opportunity to learn best practices, apply them in a demanding and creative situation and acquire an appreciation of a business leader's role.
"The CMA case competition was a great exposure to a real business scenario," says Camosun student Eric Brabander. "It allowed my education to be put to practice and re-energized my career aspirations. Overall the experience was invaluable and made for an incredible weekend."
Camosun Accounting instructor Michelle Lysak says, "I'm so proud of the students. They demonstrated all the strategic management skills they'll need to succeed in their chosen fields. Their innovation, teamwork and composure throughout the competition showcased their outstanding talents and abilities." With specialized skills in accounting, marketing and communications, the students were able to bring a comprehensive suite of recommendations to the fictional scenario. "You need to be able to see the whole picture to succeed in business today...including the social and environmental impacts of business decisions," says Lysak.
In addition to first-place honours, the Camosun team of Eric Brabander, Annette Wagers, Natalia Simo and John Turner won the competition and a $2,500 shared team scholarship. Second place went to the team of Clayton Dendy, Hardeep Rai, Andy Nguyen and Anesha Kaid from Kwantlen Polytechnic University, earning them a shared prize of $2,000. An Okanagan College team of Cameron Bailey, Ben Akenbauer, Jordan Innes and Meng An Chao took third place and a prize of $1,000. View photo... (photo courtesy of CMA BC).
