Student tech talent showcased at Capstone Symposium

After two and a half years of hard work and study, 12 teams of Camosun students showcased their final projects for the public and prospective employers. The semi-annual Capstone Symposium was held Thursday, June 14, 2012 at Camosun's Interurban campus.
Keynote speaker Rob Bennett shared words of wisdom from his 30 years experience in the Greater Victoria technology sector. Bennett is the co-founder, CEO and president of Municipal Software Corp, as well as a program director for VIATeC.
Organized by the graduating students, Capstone is the last stage before graduation for students of two diploma programs: Computer Systems Technology and Electronics & Computer Engineering Technology – Renewable Energy.
This year's student team projects included:
- Shape-shifting Traced Robotic Vehicle (STRV): designed to assist first responders in assessing a situation before any human has to enter it.
- Friends of the Friends of Mt. Doug Park: provides a mobile phone interface for interpretive park signs, trail maps and information web pages.
- POV Globe: uses 128 LEDs to create the appearance of a holographic globe with 4,000 different colours, with the potential to attract crowds at expos, concerts and theatre shows.
- Personal Safety Monitoring Application: allows someone to use an iPhone to monitor a person's location and safety.
- Photobotics Camera System: uses an Android cell phone to control a digital Single Lens Reflex (SLR) camera.
- Tracking Optimized Solar System (TOSS): software that guides a solar panel to follow and face the brightest spot in the sky.
- Android Interface Application: uses Bluetooth to control an LED panel, a window blind, a light bulb and a toy car.
- Mega-Meter: combines the capability of four primary pieces of digital lab equipment to provide affordable access for hobbyists and professionals.
- Sooner: web application to help users turn personal or professional goals into projects with small, manageable steps.
- Timesavers: a course scheduling tool for Camosun's registration system.
- Web Portal: incorporates Central Authentication Service (CAS) to allow South Island Distance Education (SIDES) students to enter their login only once.
- Pacific Mazda Price-Sheet Information: an improved system that is entirely web-based.
