Fine Furniture grads show off their "Alder Ego," June 21-29

After 10 intense and creative months, 16 students are about to graduate from Camosun College with a certificate in Fine Furniture and Joinery.
And now they're laying it on the line with their end-of-year exhibit, Alder Ego, showcasing their final projects and submitting their creations to critical judgment by industry experts at the Victoria Community Arts Council Gallery, Cedar Hill Recreation Centre, June 21-29.
Working with local alder
Each student was challenged to design and manufacture an artistic piece of furniture, using western red alder milled and kiln-dried by the Paulcan Mill in Chemainus, BC and donated by the Vancouver Island Woodworkers’ Guild. "This year's grads are BC's emerging designers," says Ken Guenter, program leader for Camosun's Fine Furniture program. "Besides showcasing their talent, this exhibit also lets the public know that high quality, well-designed furniture is being made in Victoria out of our local wood resources."
The finished chair must be designed to meet standard shipping size requirements. If the assembled project is too large, it must be designed and constructed so that it can be shipped in parts and easily assembled once delivered.
"It's important for our students to know how their new skills can work for them in the real world," says Guenter. "There is a viable global market for made-in-Victoria furniture designs."
Student projects judged June 20
The student projects will be judged by a panel experienced in the furniture industry: local designer Anne Squires-Ferguson of J.C. Scott and Associates; Chris Rothery and Christina Stack, owners of Only Human Modern Furniture, Steve Guan, owner of Fine Line Creations and a 2009 Fine Furniture grad and Ian Erdman, owner of 506 Wood Studio and a 2004 grad.
Judging will take place at the Gallery at Cedar Hill Rec Centre from 1-3pm on Wednesday, June 20, and the winner will be announced Thursday, June 21 when the exhibit officially opens at 7pm. The winner will receive a $500 cash prize, donated by the Woodworkers' Guild.
The public is welcome to view the exhibit from June 21 to June 29, from 6:30am-10pm Monday to Friday and 8am-9pm on the weekend. The exhibit closes at 1pm on Friday, June 29.
