FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Camosun College, North Island College and Vancouver Island University are each offering a Leadership and Capacity Building program for eligible First Nations students in their respective communities starting this winter. Each of the three institutions participating in this delivery has strong working relationships with First Nation communities in their area, and received commitments to recruit, select, and support the training program participants before creating the program. The program is tuition-free to eligible participants and sponsored by the Canada-British Columbia Labour Market Agreement. Camosun is offering the course through its Employment Skills Access (ESA) program.
“This regional skills training program teaches practical skills that can help participants find and maintain meaningful employment,” says Marion Knost, Regional Coordinator of the Leadership and Capacity Building Program. Effective communication, leadership skills, managing conflict, good work habits, problem solving, basic business writing, goal setting and professionalism are just some of the skills participants will explore. These skills are considered essential to First Nations people’s ability to administer and maintain control over their own community programs and services. “Recent economic development initiatives of the BC Government are designed to create self-reliance, prosperity and certainty in Aboriginal communities. I’m very excited to offer ESA to our Aboriginal partners,” says Knost.
The 18-day community-based course will be offered at the Saanich Adult Education Centre and will assist First Nations students who are unemployed or employed without a high school or post-secondary education. Bus transportation is available, and a hot lunch will be provided. The program addresses local and regional labour market development needs in response to First Nations communities by providing practical skills in leadership and employment skills training.
Camosun will offer two intakes of the Leadership and Capacity Building program starting January 31 and April 2, 2012. Interested students should apply by January 16, 2012 by contacting:
