Oceans expert and environmental advocate Fabien Cousteau opens Camosun College’s exciting 2011 Insight Speaker Series, March 15 at the McPherson Playhouse.
Growing up on the salt-stained decks of his famous grandfather's ships, Calypso and Alcyone, Fabien Cousteau was destined to follow in the family footsteps of exploring and tirelessly working to protect our planet's immense and endangered marine environments.
Journey through endangered habitats
Diving since age four, Cousteau has an unwavering appreciation for the wonder, beauty, and importance of our aquatic ecosystems to sustaining life on Earth.
Cousteau's presentation "One Water, One People," takes audiences on a journey through these habitats and offers some of his innovative ideas to combating global environmental challenges.
Replenishing fragile ecosystems
Through his new "Plant A Fish" initiative, Cousteau is involved in several projects to re-plant key marine species in their local habitats in distressed bodies of water around the world. For example, he is working with high school students in New York City to re-establish the once-thriving oyster population in the Hudson River.
He's also working with turtle egg hunters in El Salvador to replenish one billion eastern Pacific hawksbill turtles, the most endangered sea turtles in the world.
An active writer, Cousteau also stars with his father, Jean-Michel Cousteau, and sister, Céline Cousteau, in the PBS acclaimed series, Ocean Adventures, which brings the beauty of the oceans directly into viewers' homes.

Rounding out Camosun's Speaker Series is Canadian storyteller and revered Aboriginal filmmaker Alanis Obomsawin, April 6 and award-winning author of The Jade Peony, Wayson Choy, May 18.
Tickets are $22.25 each/$14.50 for students (includes service fees) for each show. Funds raised from the series go to the Camosun College Foundation for student assistance.
