Sheila Cooper (l) with Camosun friends Claire Dolsen, Linda Nugent.
Camosun employees are once again joining in to create a future without breast cancer with a corporate team in the upcoming CIBC Run for the Cure.
Team "Rack & Roll" is set to show their support in the 5km run/walk on October 3. Last year, more than 50 Camosun employees, friends and family members, "Kris' Krew," helped raise over $8,000 for the event.
This year's run has extra special meaning for Camosun. Victoria's event will be dedicated to former long-time Camosun employee Sheila Cooper. Sheila worked as a librarian at Camosun and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. After undergoing a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, she became deeply involved with volunteering for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, using her contagious energy to raise both awareness and funds for the cause. In 2009, Sheila was named run director, but that summer she received the devastating news that the cancer had returned. Sheila passed away this past April, but her positive spirit lives on at Camosun and in our community.
One in 9 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some time in her life based on living to the age of 90. Twenty years ago three out of four women diagnosed with breast cancer died from the disease. Today three out of four survive.
This year's run takes place Sunday, October 3 starting at 9am at the University of Victoria. It's not too late to join the fight. Registration is $40 including a race t-shirt. The registration fee is waived if you raise $150.
Camosun employees and students are welcome to register or donate now online at: Camosun College Team Rack & Roll.
