Summer resident artist exhibition ready for viewing

September 10 @ 6:30-9pm

September 3, 2010

After three months of intensive studio work, Visual Arts graduate Sarah Stein is excited to show her completed summer residency project.

The exhibition titled Closer: Proximities and Perimeters exhibition began as an exploration of introversion. “I envisioned drawers of all shapes and sizes holding two-dimensional works inside,” says Sarah. “In the process of making it, it started to conceptually and materially evolve, and rather than being like a quiet thought folded away, it began to hold a myriad of emotions, metaphors, and aspects of what we conceal from others that lie just beneath the surface of ourselves, desperately wanting to be seen.”

The exhibition is in the Visual Arts Building (Sculpture Annex, beside the Ceramics Studio map).September 10 from 6:30–9pm and available for viewing by students and faculty September 8-10 during the day, or by appointment with Sarah, sarah@sarahstein.com,.

Sarah is the winner of the Van den Brink Residency award (pdf), an award of self-directed study where the recipient works independently on a project using the Visual Arts facilities. It is given to a strongly self-motivated student who shows creativity and fosters community spirit of which Sarah was very qualified.

Sarah's interdisciplinary work explores the human condition through conceptual connections between natural and man-made systems and a phenomenological approach to the world. She has studied at the University of Victoria, Camosun College and Emily Carr University of Art and Design and has been awarded scholarships by the BC Arts Council.

Brenda Petays, Visual Arts instructor is thrilled to feature Sarah’s project: “Her summer residency is important to the college and visual arts and we are very proud to show her work on opening night. Her exhibition is the kick-off to the Year of the Arts for Camosun and her installation will also be featured in the new state-of-the-art library later in September."
