Flavours of the West Coast starts September 19 on CHEK TVCHEK: Your Island's Own.

September 16, 2010

The best food starts with the freshest ingredients, and that means using what's available out your back door. So says Chef Steve Walker-Duncan as he takes CHEK viewers on weekly excursions throughout the Pacific west coast in search of BC's finest culinary experiences.

Walker-Duncan wears a number of chef's hats, including instructor in the Culinary Arts program at Camosun College where future cooks are learning the skills for a culinary career. With 25 years experience in the food industry, Walker-Duncan is currently the executive chef and owner of the Ambrosia Catering and Event Centre, and vice president of the Canadian Culinary Federation, Victoria branch.

"Travelling across our fabulous province and meeting so many dedicated people working in our food systems inspires me to double my efforts to educate young cooks," says Walker-Duncan. "The passion and determination I have seen must be passed on to the next generation to sustain not only the food systems that feed us, ut the culinary industry in BC as well."

Each week, Chef Walker-Duncan will explore the scenery, culture and community of a different BC region. Then he'll demonstrate how local ingredients can be prepared, as he cooks up a special dish with the help of a rookie celebrity chef.

The first episode airs at 6:30pm on Sunday, September 19 and features the Cowichan Valley with a visit to Venturi Schulze Vineyards, Hilary's Cheese and Quwutsun Centre, plus young First Nations Chef Jared Williams will share some of his culinary expertise. Back in the studio kitchen Walker-Duncan will prepare a special recipe with the help of CHEK's news anchorman, Tony Parsons.

Flavours of the West CoastRecipes demonstrated each week will be posted online at www.flavoursofthewestcoast.com. Viewers are invited to submit a video clip of themselves trying the recipe at home, and the best clips will be aired on the last show and posted on the website.

"We are looking forward to seeing Steve on TV," says Gilbert Noussitou, chair of Camosun's Culinary Arts program. "He is a very good instructor, so we know he will also be a very interesting host."
