350 secondary students to visit Camosun and Tech Park to learn about science, technology and trades

October 27, 2010

Close to 400 high school students from four local school districts will learn how science relates to careers in technology and trades, November 1-5, 2010. Each day two busloads of students in grades 10 through 12 will visit Camosun’s Interurban campus and the neighbouring Vancouver Island Technology Park for a half day of presentations, tours and activities.

“This week-long event is being organized by the South Island Partnership (SIP), which includes Camosun College and our five local school districts,” says Kelly Knister, SIP coordinator. “And we are extremely pleased to welcome the Vancouver Island Technology Park and Victoria Advanced Technology Council (VIATeC) as participating sponsors.”

Students will arrive at the Tech Park at 9am, where they will be welcomed by VIATeC staff and hear about career options in the growing technology sector and take a tour of businesses within the Tech Park. Students will also learn about the many programs offered at Camosun that connect science and technology to careers.

Students will then walk over to Camosun’s Interurban campus where they’ll split into groups of 20 to participate in tours and activities. To explore the connection between science and technology, they’ll spend 45 minutes with displays and activities in a science and technology fair and a tour of the Engineering Technology labs.  To see how science relates to trades, students will visit the plumbing and pipe trades shop to learn about energy efficiency in applications such as home heating, and in the carpentry shop they’ll explore the science of materials such as concrete used in the construction trades. Students then return to their schools after the event ends at 11:30am.

The south Island school districts participating in this event include:

  • Monday, November 1: Victoria School District 61
  • Tuesday, November 2: Saanich School District 63
  • Wednesday, November 3: Sooke School District 62
  • Thursday, November 4: Cowichan School District 79 and Victoria School District 61
  • Friday, November 5: Cowichan School District 79

“Our event is part of the provincial government’s Year of Science,” says Knister. “We want students and teachers to understand how science connects with the real world of careers in trades and technology – and what better way to connect students to the local tech sector than with a one-two punch from VIATeC and Camosun College?”
