Camosun students and staff raise $7000 toward breast cancer research.
On Sunday, October 3, the CIBC Run for the Cure in Victoria raised a record-breaking $563,159 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.
Camosun's team of runners, called Rack & Roll, were named the top corporate team for raising over $7000. The fund-raising was done by Camosun employees and students who banded together to help create a future without breast cancer.
Winona Pugh, Victoria Run Director, Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation BC/Yukon Region presented the CIBC Corporate Spirit Team Challenge Award to Joan Yates, the dean of Camosun's School of Business on October 15.
"This year's run had extra special meaning for Camosun," says Yates. "Victoria's event was dedicated to former long-time Camosun employee and inspirational leader and organizer, Sheila Cooper."
Cooper worked as a librarian at Camosun and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. After undergoing a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiation, she became deeply involved with volunteering for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, using her contagious energy to raise both awareness and funds for the cause. In 2009, Cooper was named run director, but that summer she received the devastating news that the cancer had returned. "Sheila passed away this past April," says Yates, "but her positive spirit lives on at Camosun and in our community."
"The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is committed to a future without breast cancer," says Pugh. "We are so grateful for the commitment, energy and fundraising support from Camosun College staff and students. Thanks to them, we are that much closer to realizing our goal."
