Camosun welcomes new Dean to the School of Arts & Science

Along with the new fall semester and thousands of new students, Camosun College also welcomed Stan Chung as the new Dean in the School of Arts and Science. Passionate about innovation and collaboration, Chung arrived with strong ideas about the many opportunities he sees within the community.
No appetite for status quo
“I didn’t come to Camosun to be a caretaker of the status quo,” says Chung. Now two months into his new role, he’s pleasantly surprised at the high demand and appetite for creativity and innovation he sees throughout Arts and Science. “There’s an excitement here that is quite contagious. Faculty and staff are ready to seize new opportunities.”
Chung assumes the Arts and Science leadership during a time of healthy enrolment. Over 3100 students are currently taking a variety of core programs such as the Associate Degrees in Arts and Science as well as signature career diplomas in Environmental Technology, Applied Communication, Criminal Justice, Music, Visual Arts, and Applied Chemistry and Biotechnology.
Baldev Pooni, Vice President of Education and Student Services, is optimistic about Chung’s leadership abilities. “Stan brings to Camosun College a passion for innovative learning and teaching. His 22 years in BC’s post-secondary system affords Camosun with a perspective that will deepen our ties to the community by creating learning experiences that are second to none.”
Chung is very interested in connecting with people who are passionate about social, cultural, and technological development. “I’d like to meet any group, service organization, or leader who wants to see positive community change. The School of Arts and Science places community at the heart of what we do. We believe in reciprocity—our expertise is in fostering learning that is profoundly transformational for learner, teacher, and community. I am personally very eager to demonstrate this reciprocity. The word “community” means a great deal to Camosun College.”
Connecting with social media
A skilled communicator, Chung embraces the realm of social media. He has a presence on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and is an active blogger (read Stan Chung’s blog). “I support anything that helps bring people together. And it’s kind of fun, too, meeting your best friend from grade two and realizing you both haven’t changed that much.”
The Korean born Chung has published over 600 articles including most recently a piece in Adbusters. He writes a column called “Global Citizen” that reaches 60,000 readers in the Okanagan. He was formerly at Okanagan College where he held a number of roles including dean, associate dean, chair, and founding director for the Institute for Leadership in Learning and Teaching. His research areas include performance, improvisation, and neuroscience.
“It’s amazing how the Internet encourages you to reflect on old relationships, new responsibilities, and the landslide of immense changes that are occurring right beneath our feet,” says Chung. “Google Scholar, for me, has had a tremendous impact on our ability to share and distribute knowledge.”
