Camosun College
MEDIA RELEASE
November 9, 2010
Eight of the region’s top chefs will do battle on Sunday, November 14, each hoping to be crowned Chef of the Year. Camosun College is hosting the fifth annual competition for the Canadian Culinary Federation Victoria Branch (CCFVB).
To demonstrate their talent, skills and creativity, each of the chef competitors will have to plan and cook a four–course meal for twelve people. All cooking and baking will be prepared and judged on–site. Six chefs will judge the timed event, examining composition, balance, originality and use of local products.
“Camosun College is very pleased to be the host for this annual gala event,” says Gilbert Noussitou, professional cook training program chair. “As the south Island’s premier professional cook training institute, we have the ideal facility for this type of competition.” The competition will be held in the Helmut Huber Cook Training Centre on Camosun’s Interurban campus.
Noussitou will be one of the six judges. The French–trained Chef de Cuisine has over 30 years of experience and numerous national and international awards from France, England and Canada. Also organizing behind the scenes will be Camosun Chef Instructor Steve Walker–Duncan and a few of Camosun’s professional cook students. Walker–Duncan is a past president and currently the vice president of the CCFVB, and host of the Flavours of the West Coast TV series.
The CCFVB sponsors this annual event as a fundraiser, and the public can purchase tickets for $100 each to enjoy the gourmet meal with wine pairings. Proceeds will support the continued education of young cooks through bursaries and scholarships.
The competition will begin at 2pm, and the first course must be served by 6:10pm, with the second course following 20 minutes later. The entrée plates will be served at 7:10, with dessert coming out at 7:30. For each course, each chef will be serving 10 plates for guests and two for the judges.

- Graham Smith (Empress Hotel)
- Morgan Milward (Fireside Grill)
- Ryan Reed (Hotel Grand Pacific)
- Castro Boateng (Government House)
- Garrett Schack (Vista 18 Restaurant)
