Camosun College’s Open House provides winning opportunity for high school business students

The 2010 High School Business Simulation Competition was held this year during Camosun College’s Open House April 29. Now in its fourth year at Camosun, the competition gives Grade ll and 12 students an opportunity to test skills learned in high school business classes. The high school students form teams that are coached by Camosun business students. Business skills, strategies and ethics are put to work.
Thirteen teams from ten Vancouver Island high schools vied in this year’s event. Frances Kelsey Secondary from Mill Bay, Cowichan Senior Secondary from Duncan and G.P. Vanier Secondary from Courtenay were first-time competitors.
The contest runs as a computer simulation via the web and takes students through four fiscal quarters of managing their own corporation. Camosun first-year Business Administration students and members of the DEC (Delta Epsilon Chi) business club mentor the teams.
Larry Chung is Camosun’s First Year Business program leader and organizes the High School Business Simulation competition. "The skill level was impressive. Decisions need to be made in real-time, just as they would in business," says Chung. "Staging the competition during Open House meant more students than ever competed. The fact three new schools from up-Island competed shows the value of this sort of opportunity is recognized. It’s a learning experience for both the high school students and ours."
At the end of the afternoon, after earning 7 million after-tax dollars, the team from Victoria High was declared the winner, beating the second-place Mt Doug team. Greg Poy is the business teacher at Vic High. "The team told me after the competition that they were successful because they took all of the helpful suggestions to heart, used commonsense and worked as a team," says Poy. "They all had fun and felt it was a great experience."
Each student on the Victoria High team receives a $500 Camosun Bookstore gift card.
More than 3000 people attended this year’s Open House held at Camosun’s Interurban campus, including 2,700 high school students from 30 different schools from as far north as Port Hardy.
