Dr. Tom Roemer will become Camosun College’s new Vice President, Strategic Development effective June 1, 2010. “Tom was selected from an impressive field of candidates following a nation-wide search process that attracted much interest,” says Camosun President Kathryn Laurin. “He is entrepreneurial, a team builder and brings enormous energy, talent and creativity to all he does and I’m really looking forward to working with him in this new capacity.”
The position will be an important one for the College, focused on strengthening and growing industry connections, increasing partnerships of all types and creating or growing revenue-generating opportunities related to its business, says Laurin. “As one of the country’s premier colleges, we are continually seeking ways to better serve our community and I believe, under Tom’s leadership, we will be contributing in new and important ways,” she concluded.
Tom joined Camosun in mid-2007, assuming the role of Dean of the College’s School of Trades & Technology. Prior to that, he held a number of positions at Okanagan University College starting in 1993. Roemer was born and raised in the state of Bavaria in Germany but also lived in Greece, Portugal and Canada’s Northwest Territories. An astrophysicist by training, he completed his research project and thesis at the Max-Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics near Munich, and later specialized in technical education. In 2008, he earned his Doctorate in Educational Leadership through Simon Fraser University with a dissertation on the identity and recognition of college diploma graduates in a technologically advanced society. Multilingual, Tom is fluent in English, German and Portuguese with knowledge of Greek and Spanish.
In addition to his academic roles, Tom spent some time in the military and worked for many years in the private sector in the field of marketing and PR. Entrepreneurial, he also founded two successful companies in the IT sector, one of which, Cybernet Technologies, was awarded Partner status by Microsoft.
He currently serves on a maritime economy task force, works for a project within the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Education for Employment campaign, is Regional Chair of the National Council of Deans of Technology, and represents BC on a federally funded labour market study for engineering and technology. Tom has also served on numerous other industry, academic and community boards including one to rebuild his neighbourhood after the Okanagan Mountain fire of 2003, and Greenpeace Germany’s Mediterranean campaign.
Tom says he enjoys time with his wife, traveling the seven seas, a good bottle of port and the cuisines of the world, the musings of Bourdieu and all things canine, particularly his own dog Pancho.
A search for a new Dean for the School of Trades & Technology has begun.
