History was made last month at the 2010 Delta Epsilon Chi International Career Development Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. Camosun College business student, Conor Pommerville, was elected to the DEC executive team as a vice-president at the April 17-21 conference. Pommerville, a Camosun Business School student, is the first international officer since the organization’s inception 50 years ago in the United States.

More than 14,000 students from 230 college campuses across North America participate in Delta Epsilon Chi (DEC) which enhances student learning by providing recognition and leadership activities. Community colleges, technical colleges, four–year colleges and universities from Canada, the U.S., Puerto Rico, Germany, China, Guam and Mexico belong to DEC.

As part of the five-member(one president and four VPs) DEC executive team, Pommerville will help other Canadian student chapters, plus participate in numerous state and regional leadership conferences in Canada and the U.S. Pommerville was the 2009-10 Vice-President of Finance of Camosun’s DEC chapter, and graduates this June with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Accounting degree.

"Over the course of the next year, one of my primary objectives is to assist small chapters and regions grow their membership," says Pommerville. "As one of the founding members of our local chapter, I know the challenges that others face."

The Camosun chapter was established in the fall of 2008 with five members. Forty business students now belong to the Camosun DEC chapter.

Camosun business students competed in two case study events at the Kentucky conference. Jonathan Gehrts, also graduating this spring with a BBA Accounting degree, was a top ten finalist in Financial Services Management, and earned the top score in the written portion of the event. Conor Pommerville was a finalist in the Human Resources Management Event.

Also recognized at the conference was Camosun instructor and DEC faculty coach, Shari Corrigan. DEC named Corrigan one of eight Advisors of the Year for North America.
