Thousands of middle school students visit Interurban campus to explore trades and technology careers

March 29, 2010

Trades and Technology showcase.Interurban saw a lot of action on Friday, March 26, as 2,000 grade 8 students visited the campus for a couple hours of activities and tours.

Students got to weld metal, build doghouses, operate bull-dozers, cut and bend pipe, pull dents out of fenders, learn about safety in the workplace, and participate in all sorts of other activities. They got blown away by the wind tunnel in the Technology Showcase and climbed into an Armed Forces vehicle in the Automotive Showcase. They had so much fun, they didn’t even realize they were learning at the same time.

This high-energy event was organized by the South Island Partnership (SIP), which brings Camosun College together with five school districts: Victoria, Saanich, Sooke, Gulf Islands and Cowichan Valley.

“Our school district partners asked us to host an event for grade 8 students,” says Kelly Knister, SIP coordinator. “Today was about letting these young students have fun exploring the many options in trades and technologies.”

Thanks go to the Industry Training Authority (ITA) for funding the bus transportation and supporting the Tools of the Trade displays. Thanks also to our industry partners, who brought in equipment and staff to set up hands-on activities and displays.

As students toured the campus, they also got to see secondary students competing in the Skills Canada BC South Island Regional Competition. Camosun hosted nine trades and technology skills contests, and the gold medal winners will now proceed on to the provincial competition in Abbotsford April 21.

About 60 middle school students were also busy competing in three Junior Skills contests: Sumo Robot, Wind Turbine and Spaghetti Bridge.
