Camosun’s top Culinary Arts students are whipping up their 16th annual gala feast to help other students in financial need.

Community members are invited to Camosun’s A Recipe for Success set for Friday, March 19 at the Victoria Marriott Inner Harbour Hotel.

A four-course taste sensation

The 16th annual fundraiser dinner and auction is coordinated by the Camosun College Foundation, but each year the four-course gourmet meal is created by the College’s Culinary Arts students and faculty in coordination with the Marriott chefs and served by the Hotel/Restaurant Management students. Tourism Management students also volunteer to run the silent and live auctions. On the menu are Salt Spring Island mussels, sushi, Qualicum Bay scallops, local chicken, sablefish and local spot prawns.

“Each year the event raises close to $30,000 for the College and its students,” says Camosun Foundation Executive Director Susan Haddon. “This past year, as you can understand, has been especially hard on our students, so our focus this season is to enhance our one-time and emergency bursaries for those students in most urgent financial need.”

Ingredients for success

“A Recipe for Success is inspired by all the ingredients that combine to help students achieve their dreams: one part desire, two parts encouragement and outstanding instruction, and of course, one part financial assistance,” adds Haddon. “Over 15 per cent of our students do receive a Camosun bursary,” she says. “But, we find that more than 50 per cent of students apply for much needed assistance every year. This year alone we expect close to 3,100 Camosun students will require some kind of financial support, and may not be successful or find it enough.”

The gala begins with a champagne reception at 5:30pm at the Marriott Hotel. Bruce Williams of /A\ Vancouver Island and David Sovka of Camosun’s College and Community Relations hosts the dinner and auction beginning at 6:30pm. Silent and live auction items include: ultimate get-aways to Vancouver and Tofino, a BC golf package to Whistler and Kelowna, Aboriginal artwork, spa packages and more.
