Annual Fine Furniture Student Project Showcase

After ten intense and creative months, 16 students are about to graduate from Camosun College with a certificate in Fine Furniture and Joinery. And now they’re laying it on the line with their end-of-year exhibit, showcasing their final projects and submitting their creations to critical judgment by industry experts.
Each student was challenged to design and manufacture an artistic piece of furniture, using wood donated by the Vancouver Island Woodworkers Guild and the Saanich Rotary Club. The finished chair must be designed to meet standard shipping size requirements. If the assembled project is too large, it must be designed and constructed so that it can be shipped in parts and easily assembled once delivered.
“There is a viable global market for made-in-Victoria furniture designs,” says Ken Guenter, instructor in the fine furniture program. “It’s important for our students to know how their new skills can work for them in the real world.”
The student projects will be judged by a panel of experienced furniture industry designers, builders and retailers. Judging takes place at the Collective Works Gallery
from 1-3pm on Friday, June 18, and the winner will be announced when the exhibit opens that evening at 7pm. The exhibit will continue for public viewing through to June 27. The gallery is open from 11am-6pm Tuesday-Thursday, 11am -8pm Friday-Saturday and 1-5pm Sundays.
This year’s Fine Furniture class also took on an extra project this year, and recently presented the Victoria Airport Authority with five custom-designed tables. Working in teams, the students designed and built tables that were based upon a theme of airplanes, airports or the accoutrements of air travel. The tables are now available to the travelling public in the Airport’s soft seating area adjacent to the Capital Brew Coffee Bar and in the Eagles Landing Observation Lounge.
