Camosun hosts elementary students

The Class of 2017 came for a visit last week.
On Friday, June 18, Camosun welcomed 39 fifth grade students and their teachers, who left Vic West Elementary for a half-day field trip to Camosun’s Interurban campus. The visit was coordinated by Larry Chung, program leader for Camosun’s Business Administration program, and Co-operative Education student ambassador, Alycia Lowdon.
Fun-filled day of learning
The students toured the campus, learning about programs and career opportunities in engineering technology, trades, culinary arts and business. In Electronics, students got to see three different robots and were then introduced to CNC machines in mechanical engineering. A Trades tour was next, with demonstrations by current students in the metal trades, carpentry, plumbing and electrical shops. They got to tour the cafeteria to learn about culinary arts and nutrition, and finished off with the School of Business and an Internet scavenger hunt.
All that built up quite an appetite, so the pizza lunch hosted by Camosun was a big hit. Our young visitors then got to spend a bit of time in the fresh air playing basketball, until it was time to head back to Vic West Elementary.
Why we do it?
“This is the fifth year that we’ve invited students from Vic West to visit Camosun,” says Chung. “I feel it reflects social responsibility from the different departments involved and the college as a whole. As this event is led by a Camosun student, the elementary students can see that Camosun is not a scary place and that lots of opportunities await them.”
