On Friday, December 10, Camosun's business students put their education and training into competitive action, and before a panel of judges that included Rob Gialloreto, President and CEO of Tourism Victoria, and Brad Gable, Director, Multi-Unit Sales and Market Analytics, SYSCO, Victoria.

The end-of-semester event pits student teams against one another as they unveil and defend tourism business concepts developed as the finale to their Integrated Business Case (IBC) projects.

The IBC is a key component of the School of Business' first-year curriculum. First-year students form teams early in the school year to develop business ideas with a tourism focus. The IBC showcase is the culmination of integrating key business concepts, teamwork and skills learned from first-semester courses. The final projects are presented to their peers, teachers and industry leaders in this annual event.

"Having first-year business students working at this level, with the ability to bring the building blocks of research, marketing and business fundamentals together is impressive," says Gialloreto."Plus, the energy around students is just a lot of fun!"

Five student teams vied for 'best of class' Friday. Matthew Kerrie, Emily Litster, Jason Sims and Phil Sutton made up the Green Trippers team, and were named the Showcase winner. The Green Trippers' team prepared a business concept for a theoretical company that would support green and local businesses on Vancouver Island by offering outdoor adventure packages.

"The judges grilled each team on the viability of their business idea," says Al Morrison, IBC program leader. "The presentation environment was both challenging and supportive at the same time, and a wonderful learning opportunity for our five team finalists to experience."
