New associate dean joins Camosun’s School of Access

Camosun’s School of Access, which annually helps over 1,500 students transition to post-secondary education, welcomes Associate Dean Sarah Loewen. “Loewen’s passion for developmental education that helps people grow and transform, and her eclectic background in the private and public sectors, make for an electrifying combination that’s sure to inspire our school, and contribute positively to our greater community,” says Dean John Boraas.
Loewen, who hails from Haida Gwaii, launched an early career in recreation and tourism after completing a diploma in Hotel and Restaurant Management at Camosun in the late 1980’s. Her interest in business management, organizational behaviour and community development expressed themselves as she pursued further education and, in 2007, completed an MBA in Leadership with RRU.
Following stints at Northwest Community College and Vancouver Island University, Loewen is excited to be coming back to Camosun. “I strongly believe that education is the single most powerful way to transform an individual’s life. I also believe that having educational opportunities available is one of the most powerful ways to transform a community, and I’ve seen it. Camosun is very clear about their role as a post-secondary institution in the community, and that really excites me.”
Thirty-eight percent of students enrolled in Camosun’s university transfer and career programs begin their studies in the School of Access, either on campus or at our Community Learning Partner sites. The school provides tuition-free upgrading courses, career and education exploration, employment training and ESL classes to over 1,500 students each year.
